Retired high school Nebraska Hall of Fame coach Gene Suhr had a reputation for turning football program's around. At Papillon LaVista, which had a career 38 % winning percentage before Suhr arrived, his teams had an overall 175-68 record and made the state playoffs 20 of the 23 years he coached there. He also won two state titles.

While at Ord High School, Suhr had a 25-21 record over five seasons. The previous coaching staff lost 24 of 27 games in three years. One of Suhr's teams went to the Nebraska State Semifinals and became the first Ord team to ever qualify for a state title. His overall record for the two schools was 200-89.

Suhr then served as offensive coordinator at Wayne State College for four years and later came out of retirement to coach Creighton High School. In three seasons, his teams went 31-4 with three straight trips to the state playoffs.
